Fatal Accident on Interstate 65

A Mobile resident ended up behind bars following a fatal accident on Interstate 65 on New Year Day, Friday, January 1st. The crash, which involved Jeffery Richardson, 27, happened near Government Boulevard.

According to the Mobile Police Department, officers responded at the crash site around 5:39 p.m. after a traffic accident report. The police said the victim, a woman, entered the interstate's northbound lane from the westbound Government Boulevard.

The woman then merged into the roadway's middle lane. Simultaneously, Jefferson headed north on I-65 at top speed and struck the rear of the victim's car. The impact caused the woman's vehicle to hit the guardrail, and she rested in the middle of the northbound lane.

Responding medics rushed the victim to the hospital, where medical personnel pronounced her dead. The police said Richardson emitted a strong alcoholic odor and showed impairment signs during the field sobriety test.

The investigators identified the victim as 27-year-old Monayasia Ash. They took the male driver into custody and charged him with driving while impaired and vehicular homicide. There is no additional information about the fatal accident on Interstate 65 at this time.

Under Alabama law, drivers who are 21 years and above are legally drunk if they have a blood alcohol content of .08% or more. Drivers of commercial vehicles are impaired if their BAC is .04% and above, and it's .02% for school bus and daycare drivers and those under 21.

There are strict punishments for those who violate the above, and they cover imprisonment and payment of fines. Depending on the number of times an offender has been convicted, they face 90 days to five years jail term and $600 to $10,100 fines. Drivers arrested for DWI should contact a car accident lawyer in Alabama
